Email ABCs

I  know this isn't a new topic, but it's one that needs constant reminding: Email etiquette.

We're all busy these days. Everything is done in a rush, rush, rush. Many talk about whether the English language needs to be changed to move with the times. The first battlezone that seems to suffer the most in casualties with English is Email (of course I could include SMS texts, but let's not even go there!).

Does Email deserve different rules than snail mail correspondence? It can definitely be more casual, there's no doubting that. But it's important to remember your audience.

When you send an Email to a client you are being judged. A client doesn't care whether it's in an Email or a brochure; they expect perfect punctuation, capitalisation and spelling. Sentences need to be clear and concise. You are trying to communicate your message in the best way possible.

No one's saying you have to sound stuck-up! But don't rely on spell check. Read EVERY email over before you send it.

Common grammatical mistakes:

Its (possessive) versus it's (it is)

They're versus their

That verus which

In the next blog I'll run through some of the more common mistakes and expand on how to correct them.

Have fun!

Email etiquette is important. I would agree with you.
But, as for gramatical mistakes, I wounder how many people realy see them? Some people, like my mother for instance looks at my poor writing and the mistakes jump out at her and slap her on the face.
My question is what percentage of the population can't see the mistakes. Is it a matter of education? I had beter stop writing before you guess why I was searching for a Copyright!
